Continuous assessment

We are now using Earwig to record and share all our assessment data on our children at Black Firs. ​

Foundation stage children are assessed against The Early Years Foundation Stage criteria.
Years 1 to 6 are assessed against our Bookmark Assessment system which is based on the National Curriculum expected level descriptors.

Our on-going assessments inform teacher's planning and curriculum delivery to ensure all children's needs are met. Teachers are continually providing feedback so that children know what their next steps in learning are. The children have Bookmark targets for reading, writing and maths which they work towards on a daily basis and they are encouraged to apply these targets across all areas of our Curriculum.

As a School we formally assess children in reading, writing, and maths on a weekly basis. Teachers track children's progress and set new targets in reading, writing, and maths ​as appropriate. Parents are informed about their child's attitude to learning, Bookmark targets are online and always available. Teachers will also share more general photos and information in the child's time-line. Assessment Reports are also shared more formally in spring & summer termly parents' meeting. Parents' can login to earwig at anytime to see a full academic report which indicates academic progress and attitude to learning. In addition to parents evenings we also hold sharing afternoons which provide the opportunity for the children to share their study work and learning environment.

National Assessments

At the end of Year 1 the children are assessed on the National Phonics Screening. Their result is reported to parents.

At the end of KS1 (Year 2) Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs) are undertaken in literacy and numeracy. These are marked by our School staff and moderated with other schools. The teacher's assessments are reported to parents at the end of the year.

At the end of KS2 (Year 6) Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs) are undertaken in literacy and numeracy. These are sent away to be marked. All Year 6 pupils across the country take the tests in the same week in May. The test results and Teacher Assessments are reported to parents at the end of the school year.

New Curriculum Assessment

The new national curriculum has been taught in primary schools since September 2014. At Black Firs we follow our own curriculum but it is closly aligned to the new national curriculum. Those children who are at the end of KS2 in May 2016 will be the first to be assessed against the new national curriculum.

From 2016, national curriculum test outcomes will no longer be reported using levels. Scaled scores will be used instead. Following the removal of teacher assessment levels, interim teacher assessment frameworks will be used to make judgements for children at the end of Key Stages in 2016.

At Black Firs we have set out our end of year expectations for each year group and children are monitored towards achieving these through individual target Bookmarks. Children are expected to make five average points or five Bookmarks through KS1 and four average points or four bookmarks throughout KS2. ​
